I have specifically linked two songs to this blog, as these songs have a raw truth about them, the messages are clear and at times are hard to listen to.
The first song is by Angel Haze-Cleaning out my closet originally done by Eminem, Angel Haze has changed the lyrics to apply to her own life story. My reasoning for linking the song is that it has probably been one of the most profound songs i have ever listened to, the feeling i got from listening to it and the awareness it brought me, it put me on another level of thought. Haze taught me what brutal honesty sounds like. To create awareness you need to say the things everyone else is too afraid to say.
One of my causes I hold close to my heart is child and women abuse, Angel Haze's personal story is gut wrenching in this song, and it brings home the brutality of such violence.
LISTEN, THINK, FEEL and CREATE.
YouTubeImmortal Technique, this man has changed my life in so many ways, but the biggest lesson he has taught me through his music is to speak out about change and the way the world works. I respect him as an artist as he has never "sold out" he refuses to go main stream so that he can control his own creativity and messages. Immortal's influence is of a political nature, he escaped the struggle of the civil war in Peru which ultimately was one of his biggest influences in his music. He found his voice through Hip Hop to speak out, mostly about government issues dealing with Peru and the United States of America.
He made me think a lot about my own country and the challenges we face as a society, such as inadequate housing, extreme poverty, corruption, abuse against women and children and sexual identity discrimination. I became a rebel with a cause, I incorporated my art work with my causes which encouraged me to start producing political street art.
RIOT.
"The medium is the message" - Marshall McLuhan meaning that the form of a medium embeds itself in the message, creating a symbiotic relationship by which the medium influences how the message is perceived.
