Shack Chic

Craig Fraser the photographer and Libby Doyle a designer released the book Shack Chic which is about the design and beauty in South Africa's shacks, Fraser and Doyle on weekends traveled to informal settlements to take photo's and observe the design of shacks, the way Fraser has taken his photographs depicts shacks in a completely different way, he saw the beauty and design in South Africa's informal settlements, where as most people see the informal settlements as "dirty" and "ugly" man made shelters.

I have also found inspiration in the shacks that occupy the city of Johannesburg as well as the people that live in them. I took photo's of my experience in Itsoseng Township and what beauty I have found.

Fraser's photography has definitely inspired me and my design thinking, and what I love the most about the shacks is how real they are, there is a sense of truth when you look at them.

I personally love the the art work on these containers, as it resembles the creche for the children of Itsoseng.

I found this picture to be particularly honest as it resembles our society, there is a rainbow but we are caged from it, there I still segregation.

Below are the doors to the shacks, i found it quite interesting because of the branding element.

The image above is the whole compound of where each door comes from.

I loved this picture because of the boldness of the shack as well as the colouring of the different rusts, I also think the bold typography on the sign is very expressive.

The last images show the life and vibe of Itsoseng.
